Untitled: Portrait of a Soldier

Title: untitled
Media: Watercolor
Signed: Lower Right
L. C. Earle  n.d.
Size: 13 x 10 inches

William Christen, an expert in 19th century men's clothing I talked to recently (December 2012)  suggested this uniform looked European. The hat is civilian. He surmised it may be a soldier of the Franco-Prussian War in 1870-71.

Earle was in Europe during the early 1870s and known to be in Germany before 1874. He certainly could have found such a subject to paint.
